Toadstools- Brochure and Sculpture

I believe it is a great exercise for 2D artists to experiment with sculpture at some point in their life. It engages a completely different part of your brain and I found it broadened my perspective and abilities as an artist. I wanted to create a project that combined both illustration and sculpture and came together as one project.

I decided to create a brochure with supporting sculptures of a fantasy species I created called “Toadstoools”.

The Brochure

This shows one side of the brochure unfolded and laid flat. The far right one third where it says Toadstools is the cover portion. This was created with watercolor set up in Indesign.

The far left panel explains that Toadstools are fungphibians commonly found near ponds or in forests. Each fungphibian has a mushroom growing from it that can be humanely harvested. Each of these mushrooms carry unique flavors and rarely special abilities granted temporarily to those who ingest them.

Toadstool Guide

A guide showing a list of common toadstools and the effects their mushrooms give if touched/eaten. According to the key you can see some are deadly or poisonous, common or rare.

Some listed effects include- dissolving flesh on contact (deadly if eaten), makes you glow in the dark, tastes like pumpkin in the fall but dirt in all other seasons, makes people within a short range feel warm and happy, etc.

Sculpture

Ideally I could sculpt all of the above Toadstools but I choose a couple to start with. The first I chose is called a Gibba Figere, seen on the bottom left of the chart. The effect of this one is it can cure acne or bug bites if applied topically however if ingested it will cause ugly red boils. The second I chose to sculpt is on the top left called Pulmofiunt, this is a poisonous yet treatable toadstool that if eaten will cause mold to grow in your lungs.
